Lace Day in L.A.!

Saturday, November 1, 2008 was a great day for lacers in the Southern California area. It was the 24th Annual Lace Day in L.A.! Let me show you some of the highlights.

~*~

It was put on by the
There was BEADS GALORE!!!
Yarnplayer, I thought of you when I took this photo!

Look at the
Tatter's CANDY!
Presented by "Loopy Lacer"
Lily Morales.
She has a link at http://www.loopylacer.com/
that is having trouble at the time of this posting.

She's my favorite tatting angel.
This is her secret box o'tatting stash
(kits that go with the "Victorian Christmas"
tatting books).
As I walked away from her booth I said,
"Thanks, Lily, you're my tatting Angel!"
She said with a wink,
"NO! I'm your tatting enabler!"

Truer words were never spoken.
We had a good laugh at that.

Aside from Lily's booth
there were also booths with tatting supplies from

Village Spinning and Weaving

Snowgoose

and
Provo Enterprises (Lace Making Supplies)
no link available

Yes, I got tatting goods from them all.
...sigh...
(shaking head at self and shrugging shoulders)

Here's a tatting board display.

A beautiful hand tatted beaded pendant
by Patsy Goodman.

I HAD to show you a closeup of the main motif.
Isn't it beautiful?

Check out this gorgeous chain of the pendant.
look at the way she added the beads.
Good job, Patsy.
She said about the pattern's origin,
"Oh, I got it out of one of the Japanese books."
See, I'm not the only one who tats in foreign languages, LOL!
;)

~*~

Since this is a Lace Show it celebrates handmade lace of all types.
Check out these
beautiful works of art!
A bobbin lacer's WIP (work in progress)
on a roller pillow.

A 12 year old girl shows us her bobbin lace
on a flat pillow.
This girl's pillow is a boogie board
covered with fabric!
Yup a boogie board,
the same that you take out in the ocean.
Insiders say this is much better and less
expensive than buying a flat pillow from a dealer...
just FYI!!!

This is a GORGEOUS piece of
handmade tape lace
displayed beautifully in a tray.WOW!

Here's a beautiful hand knitted lace shawl.
Isn't it lovely?
It's a famous norwegian pattern that
many hand knit lacers may recognize.

Here's a woman learning needle lace
in a class taught by Nancy Evans from Seattle, WA.

This is an exquisite piece of
advanced handmade needlelace
by Nancy Evans.
Isn't it gorgeous?

Thanks for going to Lace Day in L.A. with me! I was exhausted after, LOL! How about you? That was another long one, wasn't it! The vendors were fabulous and it was fun. There were drawings and a lecture on the history of lace through the ages. Did you know that back in the 1400's that handmade lace was a form of currency? Gosh, I wish it was now, I'd be RICH! LOL! :)
It was so much fun to see friends from my lace guild and meet new people. I even met a "friend" from eTatters that we have left messages for online about each other's tatting and we met by happenstance at the Lace Show! Hi Nita! ;)
It was a fun day...wish you could've come with me! No, really, I do!
Feel free to leave a comment. I'd love to hear from you. Visitors and comments are always welcome.
Sincerely,
TattingChic
xoxo

  7. Just found out that in October Mark Meyers was within about an hour and a half drive away giving a class on tatting an angel. I am not expierenced enought yet but it sure would have been nice to at least watch.

  8. Hi Lady Shuttle Maker, Lily is a doll, isn't she? It was nice to be able to go.

Hi Bonnie, thanks for letting me share with you!

You would've enjoyed it, Snowy. There were lot's of bobbins of all kinds and plenty of beads for the spangling kind!

Thanks, Diane. Glad you like the pics. It was a nice day.

Hi Susanne...well...maybe it was an expensive day and maybe it wasn't...LOL! ;) Thank you for letting me share with you. It was nice to be able to go. I almost didn't, but I'm glad I did!

Oh, WOW, Kathy, that would've been nice to go and meet other tatters. I don't know Mark Myers or how he teaches, but I'm sure it would've been a very nice time.

  15. Wow, I am exhausted and broke after attending the lace day with you! We really need to do that again :). Everything is so beautiful, I just can't imagine making lace...how can anyone sell their work and how can you put a price on such items? Thanks for sharing such priceless work.

    Hugs,
    Kathi :)

  19. Handmade lace should be a form of currency! What gorgeous things. I would drool all over those beads.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Excellent point, Kathi! That is a subject of many a debate on the online tatting groups. It is something that is very rare, painstakingly slow and and unappreciated by the masses when they can have inexpensive, cheap looking, machine made lace so readily! It's very hard to put a price on it.

Hi Barb, aren't some of these lacers amazing? I'd love to learn more of it, myself. I do love tatting, tho'!

Hi Gina! It would've been nice to see you there! We coulda done lunch or somethin'! :)

Thanks for coming to lace day with me, Penny! ;) You can come and visit anytime.

Hi Adrienne! Welcome and do come again. Thanks for the comment.

  24. Now, now, Tatting Chic, are you sure it was wise for you to go to that lace show? You know with your addiction problem and all. Some of those pieces were so beautiful-hard to believe they were hand made. Thanks for sharing. Nerm

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thank you for going on the tour with me, Clyde! Glad you like it.

Hi Tattycat! It was a nice day and I'm glad I have fabulous people like you (and others) to share it with.

Yes, Nancy, that is what these lace guilds are all about...to help preserve and pass on the beautiful art of hand made laces. They are an important part of history.

Here, here, Nerm! Was it wise??? ummmm....nope! Was it fun??? YUP!
It was purely educational, purely educational! ;)

  27. Oh wow, just beautiful!!! I just posted some snowmen...come back and take a peek. Laurie

  28. wow! seriously, is it slightly overwhelming? i get overwhelmed with so many goodies around me. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Excuse me, I'm drooling......must be something to do with age!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks, Our Shabby Cottage. It was a nice day out! Thanks for visiting. :)

Hi Laurie! Glad that you could stop by. I popped over to see your cute snowmen shovels...so cute! Left a comment there, as well.

LOL! Funny you should say that, Kids Napping? I'm Scrapping! The first year I went to the Lace Show it was very overwhelming. It is a very unusual sight to see so many tatting supplies together (live and in person~so to speak). I've learned to go with a plan in mind of what I want to get and I keep a bibliography of tatting books (so many...I forget what I have). ROFLOL, it NEVER works...I get so excited and overwhelmed I STILL overspend....shhhhhhhh!

Hi Virtual Quilter! Naw, drooling has nothing to do with age; just ask the youthful Lady Shuttle Maker! (First comment on this post).

Hi Jen, thanks for the comment. Always so nice to have you stop for a visit.

  36. Hi Darly, yes, I thought that the beauty of the beaded hand tatted necklace was undeniable! Thanks for your comment.

Hi Stacey Steimle, welcome and thanks for visiting! Come again!

No, no Rosemary! Thank YOU!!! LOL! ;)

Hi Karen, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the lace day post. I believe when you say "machine" you mean the roller pillow. It's not a machine at all! It's just a place to set the pins which the lacemaker wraps thread around from her many wooden bobbins hanging down from the lace in progress...HEY! Lace In Progress would be LIP...LOL! I just came up with a new term...Whoo HOOOOOOO!

Hi Suzie! You weren't multitasking while making that comment, were YOU? ;)

Welcome back, Martha! THanks for commenting. Hope to see ya again, soon.

I had no idea there is such a thing as needle lace.... but from what I see ....it would be something I would love to learn

I also could not imagine walking away from those booths without spending a huge amount of money... even if you dont tat ... the laces themselves are a collectors/sewers dream ....

Thank you for the tour... I am finding your venue to be one of major interest...

Isnt my PJ silly... trust me that photo shoot with her was not set up... I had absoluetly nothing to do with it...I turned around to find her looking at me like that and just cracked up ...it was all I could do to snap the pics as I was laughing so hard... she is my little nut

Hi Jillian, thank you for coming along with me! Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Lace Hearts, something told me you would like the post, LOL! Hmmmm...what could it be about you? Your "name", perhaps???

Shabby Addict, I never heard of lace day until I joined a lace guild, that may be why. For some reason they do not have a very big advertising venue. It may be limited resources.

LOL! Thimbleanna, you are too funny! Well, see, now that's what you get for flying off to Ireland and Cat-sitting!

Good, Laurie! I'm glad you got the giveaway package! Enjoy! I will check back for your post about your goodies! :)

Wow! Meredith Teagarden! I am honored that you would bookmark this post! Thanks! Welcome back! Come again anytime.

Hi Jo! Needlelace is actually one of the oldest forms of lace there is! If not THE oldest...from many centuries ago. It is what many machine laces are based on. Glad you enjoyed the photos and yes, your doggie is adorable!

Kathi, you are right! It has been lovely here, today! Glad to hear you are having lovely weather as well.

Hi Laurie! Yes, good point, "baby steps"! You are right! Tatting takes a bit of time to learn. I hope the book helps, I'd never looked at it before. You'll have to tell me if it helps or not.

Hi Jen, Glad you like the shawl. I thought the gal who did it had done lovely work, too!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi Joanne,
That is so cool that you are a fan of tatting! Tatting is a bit of a challenge to learn at the very first and then once you get the switch of the threads (or the "flip") down then the rest is relatively easy! Really! It's just the same stitch over and over. It's kind of addicting in a way.

Hi Nuts to You! I think I have some of those heart shaped pans only mine are red silicone. I think I got mine at target, too! LOL! Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for stopping by, Lorena. Glad you like tatting! Come back any time. Yes, it's cool that Tattrldy won your giveaway!

Hi Kathi, hope you've been having a fabulous weekend. I've been taking it easy. Come visit anytime!

Thank you, Lindsey. Glad you came for a visit.

    Awww...thanks Marie Antoinette! You're a sweetie!

Hi Miss Rhea! Thanks for your comment. That would be so neat if you learned to tat. I hope you do learn. There are lots of great resources to help you learn on the internet!

Well, thank you for joining me for looking around at Lace Day, Carolyn! I'm glad you enjoyed the event with me...LOL! It's nice to share with people such as yourself.

Thank you, Rue. I did have a nice time. It was great!

Thank you Kathleen Grace, that is huge compliment to be asked if I sell my tatting. At present, I do not. I've been asked that before. The thing is, it's hard to put a price on it because of the amount of time it takes to do it in.

I'd love to hear what you have to say!

While you're leaving your comment so dear
This is what I'd rather hear...

If "TattingChic" seems like it's too long
"Chic" or "Chiclet" will sound like a song.

In other words, you see,
Please don't call me "TC"!

Please! :)
...and thank you!
