Vintage Inspired Tatting Design...I've Been Tagged!!!..AND I WON! I WON! I WON!..again!!!

What a fun day in Blogger-land today! I've had 3 really really cool things I want to share with you today.

The first thing I want to share is this bookmark I designed and tatted over the last 24 hours.

This bookmark has utterly consumed my entire being for the last 24 hours! It all started when my friend Matt...

( he gave me permission to use his first name and last name, address, phone number and run a small advertisement for him that he is single and available. I opted to just use his first name and State of residence in the US...there's a link to his my space page on his name...please don't judge him by the pic of the wierd girls with the pink wigs where his photo should be...that's NOT him! Besides, he's a nice guy.)

... from Connecticutt said to me, "TattingChic...." well, he really didn't say "TattingChic" but you get the idea right? He said, "TattingChic....will you tat something for me?"
I was actually kind of surprised by the request as he doesn't seem the kind of guy who would request a piece of handmade lace, but we never really know people, do we? LOL!
I said, "Okay..." thinking about how he's really kinda helped me out in a tight spot in the past and probably deserves a little tatting, "I know, I'll tat you a bookmark! What color do you want, blue?"
To my utter surprise he came back with "White....yeah...white....no...red roses...I want red roses with white...."
"Uhmmmm....okay...are ya sure about that Matt?", I said knowing that this guy is not effeminate in the least and has a powerful attraction toward women. Not that heterosexual men can't be liking red roses or lovely things, that's not what I'm saying...so what am I saying?

I really don't know what it is I'm saying...I'm very sleep deprived right now, go easy on me...LOL

He said most assuredly, "Yup, red roses, that's what I want...and white...and I want it BIG, too
none of this little stuff."
Okay, I know a way around that. I used size 20 thread...LOL! The bookmark measures 9 inches long and is 2 and 1/4 inch wide...Is THAT big enough for ya, Matt?

So, here's the thing. I know there are other rosette style bookmarks out there and they're nice, they're okay, but they're just not something I wanted to spend my time tatting so I happened to have these vintage workbasket needlework magazines out that I inherited from my Grandma and I felt inspired by this old baby bonnet pattern from the Feb 1969 Workbasket. I've tatted that bonnet when I was fifteen and it was just beautiful. So, I redesigned the rosettes a bit more to my liking and connected 5 of them with a round also of my own design. I had to cut off the first design as it had severe design flaws, but the mathematics of the stitch count all worked out in the end so this is what I ended up with.
It's way too big for a regular bookmark I would normally make, but it's MATT's bookmark. I'll probably redesign it again just for fun.

Here's where the obsession came in. Yesterday at 3:00pm I started drawing the picture
of the bookmark design I saw in my head. Wrote in my own version of shorthand the pattern and tatted for about 2 hours.
I woke up at 12:45am...couldn't sleep...started tatting...til 4:30am...ate breakfast and then tatted
it all day until 5:00pm I couldn't stop! I did eat, but I just couldn't stop til it was done. Wierd, that!

(but then, so is Charlie Sheen and Brad Pitt, well, he's okay...LOL)

6. German Chocolate Cake is my absolute favorite cake.

The Heart of Friendship

What does frienship mean to you?

Friendship means many different things to many different people. For some it's the kind look someone gives you when you've made a social faux pas for others it's the one who goes to a social event with you when you just can't stand to go alone. It can mean these and many, many different things.

In my last post I shared an experience I've recently had with a friend who has graciously helped me out in a difficult time. I felt this was deserving of a little tatted token of friendship...a heart.

She seemed to like the idea.

I spent most of the day yesterday tatting this up for her. I'm counting it as one of my motifs for the 25 Motif Challenge.

Motif # 6 A Heart of Frienship

Frienship Heart as seen from the front for those of you who care to stare at it and figure out what that means because to most people it looks exactly the same as the back...hee hee.

This tatted heart pattern was designed by Teri Dusenbury. It's called "Sadie". I used a new ball of white DMC Cebelia thread size 20 with 2 new Aero shuttles that I purchased yesterday...LOL...I was running low on shuttles and thread as you may have noticed from my previous post. (removing tongue from cheek, now)



I'm really proud of this heart because for the first time I tatted a front from a back. I think that doing the 25 Motif Challenge is helping me to improve my tatting skills. In order to do a front and back when I reversed work for the chains, I tatted the second half of the double stitch first, and then the first half of the double stitch second and so on and so forth so that when turned over all the double stitches looked the same on both the rings and chains. I've never done that before. I think I tried once, but I got so confused I stopped. I wasn't ready for such ridiculous attention to detail. I don't know if I will do it on continuous basis.


My friend will probably never know the difference, but I will have the satisfaction of knowing I can do it again if I want to.

I gave it to her in this little card.

I love to make handmade cards, but this one was from an awesome box of cards I got at Costco a while back. If you have a Costco Club store in your area and you like cards you should really take advantage of this deal! They're about fifteen dollars for a box of thirty or more beautiful cards and they're all different from each other! They're great when you're in a rush and you don't have time to make one or you just like a cute handmade look without the fuss. This is one of the more elegant ones, most of them are more cutesy...I don't know why, but I just had to put that little plug in there for the Costco cards...LOL!

I thought I would tat a heart for a friend of mine. She's been awfully nice driving me around on occasion when needed. Remember this? My car was out of commission; it was totalled. I did not have reliable transportation. This friend, J., she has been really nice. She's listened to me talk about my trials of not having a car and other woes. She's driven me to get groceries, abandoning her husband and bringing her two kids in tow to help me out once a week. I asked her if she'd like something tatted. I figured it was the least I could do since I cannot actually repay her. I was surprised when her eyes actually lit up! I thought I would at least get a forced look of 'being pleased' but no, it was a spontaneous sincere lighting up of the eyes. So, I said, "Would you like a heart? I'll tat you a heart, that way you can frame it if you'd like. It'll be a nice symbol of frienship!" She agreed.

But you see, I have a bit of a problem.

I have nothing to tat today.

...see....NOTHING!

No books...

One hundred fifty and counting....and this isn't all of them...

no patterns...

No plastic tatting shuttles ( bobbin or post)....sigh...

and worst of all...

NO THREAD...

Since I have no thread I said to my friend, "What color would you like?"

To my utter dismay she said "Oooohhhh, WHITE! Yes, isn't that the usual color for lace?"

I said, "Well, that certainly is a common color, are you SURE you wouldn't like another color?"

She said, "Oh, no, white."

"Okay." I said, smiling all the while. "White it is."

The worst of it is...

I have no white thread!

See how I lack in white thread?

What is a girl to do? With no tatting books, patterns, shuttles, or thread...LOL?

I just might have to go buy a shuttle or two or three or four because I just don't have ENOUGH!

I'll probably have toss some thread in the shopping cart, since as you can see I don't have ENOUGH!

ALWAYS room for more...more...MORE!!! BWAH-HA hA Ha hA


Does anyone else have this problem?

If you relate to this at all, how do you store

all that tatting stuff that you can't get enough of?

Thank you for visiting TattingChic...a little blog about nothing. If you tat maybe you can relate to this. If you don't tat, maybe you have a hobby of some sort that you just can't get ENOUGH of! Isn't it great? All that stuff that you would probably need two lifetimes to tat all of it up, or scrapbook it all up, or quilt, or rubberstamp or acrylic stamp or make enough cards of or......you get the idea.

Or maybe you're just a hoarder for hoarders sake, in which case, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, I think there might be a special medication for you. At least there's some specialists who can help you haul all that junk away and help get you organized and you can have your life back.

As for me and my tatting stash...

...don't even THINK about hauling it away!!!
