The lady is holding a knotting shuttle!

You can tell it's a knotting shuttle

because of its large size. Knotting was very

popular in the 1700's amongst royalty

and aristocracy which is consistent with

the lady's dress. Knotting is considered

by many to be the "mother" of tatting!

tatting shuttles, except for their size,

knotting shuttles are much larger.
